Law today

After reading this article on NRIs and inheritance, I wondered about Foreign ownership of American agricultural land. Some countries Argentina limits foreigners land purchase.
Knowing law seems to be like a philosophy. What the land of the law wants. I am still trying to understand that Foreign corrupt practices act which seems like a teacher taking the responsibility for her students even after school.
I still havent seen the movie Stranger than Fiction. But Law brings us to the bizarre but true situations.
Only if you are a corporation can you feel smug that a research shows that the rate of death in clinical trial was same as another accepted pharmaceutical drug.

Confidential - nature of surveillance

The catch 22 nes in Surveillance act criticized but can it be fought reminds me of the time when I couldnt locate the people on my group ticket and the airline receptionist wont share with me the details if they checked in or not as it is 'confidential'.

Statute of limitations.
Foreign corrupt practices act.  what they say about reach of the law

Floating fancies

When I went to Nainital, I liked climbing a mound just like Susan Orleans was enchated at a shooting party, that I thought I might have been a Sherpa in my previous life.
In Kulu Manali at a resort, giving a go at archery, I recalled all Dronacharya lessons to Arjuna. i thought I was cut out for it.

Perspective

In Soul Surfer, Carrie Underwood shows a bunch of students, a close up of eyes of fly and a walnut and tells them about how unrecognizable things can become if you look at them too close.
And some are understood only through intense viewing through a microscope. A thing is many depending upon where you look at it from.

Today

Cramming info in appealing visuals.

Zip line at State fair.

A picture without frame. Photo button.

A couple followed by a child knocked our door. The lady held a bible in her hands. I knew what would follow next.
"We have a religion".
And the next sequence was to the effect of ending the conversation.
Now, can you "have" a religion?

Changing Mill Avenue

Its been  while since I have been to Mill Avenue. A spate of eateries have opened up. Handlebar Tempe with its links to La Bocca.

Links

On a birthday cake, I saw
Growing old is mandatory, Growing up is optionalChili Davis.
When I came across “Reaching the summit is optional. Getting down is mandatory.”  in Everest '82.  The logo in the movie reminded me so much of Toblerone.

Theres a reference to pale horse in the movie.

Why do we iron our clothes lets just wear wrinkled ones. Another reason - To prevent scabs and scorches on arms.

A difference a clear day makes

Revisiting places I find something that I have missed the time before. This time I realised that Mt Humphrey's is visible from Verde Valley.

Recently a colleague surprised us with the fact that Colorado River is the left border of Arizona. He told us a quip too.
The river changes its route now and then. A lady whose house moved to CA was asked if she wanted to be in CA or AZ.
Lady: CA. Its cooler there.

On Antelope canyon boating ride, I found about how Antelope canyon was filled with water due to back fill from damming the Colorado river with Lake Powell dam. At the dam I found a red lizard. It reminded me of how we returned from hostel, all clothes colored red from the sand around. Lees Ferry as a book title in the information center seemed very familiar.

A 6 hr boat tour includes a view of Rainbow Bridge National Monument.

On the drive to page, we thought we saw a trio of fountains welling up. when close we found them to be smoking stacks of Navajo Generating station. It gets its coal supply from Kayenta Mines.

The road close to Zion National Park is natural with its dark red colour.

Canyons and Layers. the bottom of one is top of another. Grand Canyon, Zion Canyon, Bryce Canyon.
The shuttle at Zion Canyon explained the history very well. All the pioneers who recognised the wilderness.

Meeting love suffices for a day.

ABC does not live here

How are you at checking your mail? Is it a chore that you have to do so as not to collect it at the post office.? Like laundry, there is an acceptable limit of procrastination. Not a tough task when you think about it. But it needs to get done.
In that precious mail space, where my mail can collect in comes mail addressed to a new addressee. I called the rental office to let them know and check if another resident of theirs swapped the building number. A couple of days in, we know have become a mail service sending it to the office with manager's prompt 'Oh, I'll take care of it for you right away' which means plan another visit when I'm not here.
When I saw a A4 size packet not for me, I fueled myself up for a duel and started in a simulated tone :
Me: Its the third time I'm here about this. I keep getting this ABC's mail in my mailbox.
Asst: Honey I dont deliver the mail
(I totally had to switch my tone)
We were trying to figure why this is happening.
Asst: Does your mailbox have names in it
Me: Only mine
Defending why the mail needs to be routed if its in their channels
Asst: I'm going to return it to sender
I went to the mail box and there I see my name card space split into half with a black line with ABC below it.
How did this happen unbeknownst to me. But we forget the Postman/woman with the super key who can write any name they like and you ferret the unwanted mail. In news isUndeliverable mail experiment helps us understand why some governments work well and others fail. Unbeknownst to me am I part of an experiment?

Conversation - new thread

In a meeting, a colleague started a new thread away from the tech stuff, when we were laughing, he said he knew why we were laughing and told us of his losses in fantasy football.
I saw a paper with a photo on the back of a van pasted on a side and flapping on the other. It was a found ad of a dog. The first of its kind that I have seen. I have always seen lost.
Talking of art on the go, I had learnt of Ambigrams from my friend. I spotted 'Satan' as an ambigram on he back of a van.

Time travel

Time is the sea in which all ensues

The memorial had a foundation
Thats known since the last three weks
while the castle
opened to public

Tovrea Castle
The video viewing at the beginning of the trail and the golf cart stops on the mounds on either side of the castle set up the mystery. The trimmed garden and rocks opposite to Robert Frost's 'Mending wall' that will stay where they are and as white.
Most tories have a beginning and an end. Even though this begins as the story of the castle, the families involved in it, get you interested in their metal sheet business in San Francisco, butcher business in Phoenix and the imaginary real estate business that never took off. This story was house to residents who had yarns unrolling in other places like Prescott. the bell at the entrance from the mayorships.
Our docent told us what happened to Alissa Carraro after the castle and how he ended up at Yarnell.
There is a picture showing a clay model of the castle and grottos on both mounds with a waterfall in between them. The story has not ended. the blueprint hasnt been finished.

Two kinds of Words

Latosol seems like a legit word. Words that I feel like they would have a meaning and that I would like to know. There are many in the dictionary half baked for every day talking but great for points in games like Scrabble or Scramble with Friends.

What if you use your dishwasher to wash your clothes?

Take a good look at this  Exhibit A.
Doesnt it look awfully similar to

In a recent Costco jaunt, looking for laundry detergent, we found tide pods and then we found this green and white thing at a lesser price and bonus pods. Happy shoppers. A recent ad with a husband and wife quabbling over scrubbing the muffin pan before putting into the dishwasher with 'cascade'. And then comes in
the mediator/expert who says that the husband is right. I looked at this ad peripherally a couple of times, until this time where I started paying attention. And then it made me wonder if my clothes are being washed with a dishwater detergent. A quick laundry room check confirmed it.
In  this world of grabbing discounts, it is not a surprise that such mess ups happen. Trying to satisfy an optimizing condition, hurting the main function.

I hear her breathe. Its a mark in time.

Novelty captures us for a moment. In a long piece, how is the reader in thrall for succession of moments?
Last night while reading something,  I thought that I should read fiction at least until I reach one imaginative leap.

Pacifier shaped candy

Milk bottle shaped candy

Walking the aisles of Walmart for the party bags, I found these baby feet shaped candy. They are colourful than they look here.

All these went in to the plastic wine glass.

Overlapping past into present

Yesterday after watching chevrolet ad, I tried to explain to my friend that I read of something like this. i couldnt recall the name. but today when I saw this book in the library,
I recognised it instantly.

Crime and minors

In The momentGregory McGuire talks of a time when minors accused of crime didnt have anonymity under British law. To not stigmatise the minors for one crime, even in India, the juvenile courts, officers are all devoid of uniforms.

Animals

In the cafeteria, a colleague was piecing together a puzzle. This time its very colourful. 'Noahs Ark' the box says. Some pieces of giraffe are together. We thought it should be easy to fix them in place. And then our colleague reminded us that there are two of them. Remember the Noah's_Ark had two of each species on the boat.
Last night I dreamt that I had gone to a high school friend's house for dinner and her mom had made giraffe shaped rotis for us. In the end she asked if we wanted to take the leftover and there was this hanging thing that if we didnt she wouldnt have to worry about fixing the next meal.

Musings of the day

Today I saw the picture of lake solitude in Yellowstone mountain. And another of the mountain snow reflected in the lake. I dont think I have seen that ever before.
Looking at the blue, red, yellow birds on Audubon calendars I wondered how the colours that I knew for birds until then were only black, grey, white, green.
I dreamt of rattle snakes, must be the effect of the news of it being found in some one's home. guess what I could do in this dream, fly higher than above. Then I found myself smoking. And a new big home. Some one else's.

First hike

I had to wake up at 4.30 to make it to the hike. I slept early at 9.30. At 12.30 I woke up and could not sleep till 3.30. My friend and I were late. we reached the parking lot at 6.30, while we should have been there at 6.00.

Stripped of shots

In the recent past, I had trouble cherishing my favourite White Mocha. Towards the end, I could not have it anymore and the effects of caffeine would roll in- like my heart beating in my stomach.
Yesterday, I came up with a brilliant idea of having the cake, without hurting the tooth- the shots had to be put to sleep. The drink has now bared to white chocolate.
Makes me almost think that another barista's shots (forgot)

Object of Suspicion

In Roald Dahl's 'The Umbrella Man', the twelve year old girl says that her mother is especially suspicious of two things - strange men and boiled eggs. While these are not the only things, one should be wary of.. One thing that every woman should put to a strict test is that shoe.

Fables and foibles

A while ago I was asking my mom for folk tales. After a week she recalled a camel and fox story. (second in the link). The only change being instead of eating chickens and vegetables, in the story that she read as a child, the duo target a sugarcane field. This version makes the fox more human with its sweet cravings.
Two animals crossing the river reminded me of scorpion and frog story in

. This story, Wilson says is a fable about the dark side of human nature.
A while ago I read
and always used to wonder how are we to understand humanity through another species. But recently on NPR I heard of observational studies of puffins and then it flashed that when we find some interesting behaviour in another species, we start to look around and explore other birds around. To understand the behaviour, we translate it into our life and know about ourselves as humans.

Puppet playing Red Chamber - A horror

Red chamber has 400 characters in it. Curious about Mahabharatha, I see that it has about  110 Characters not counting the 100 Kauravas.
The book could use some character merging for modern readers.

When you are up for equations

I hadnt heard of Midas equation.

Falsifiability

Paper quilling

When I saw this paper quilling piece at 6bittersweets, I didnt give much thought on how its done as it was late in the night. Now I see that it uses a tool and paper strips.

Words meet

I was trying to answer What word will you rarely/never use in a poem?. The correct answer is a word that I dont know. But for kicks, I opened the dictionary to find a word that I hate. I came across nurse maid and then 'milk maid' figured. Milkmaid as a conjunction of two words. In that dictionary search, when I came across 'Mongoose', it seemed like I was looking at a stranger I was tring to place.

While thinking of folktales, I was reminded of  Burra katha. I watched it once as a kid in my grandfather's village during Dussehra late night.

The scale in this cover page being different fits well into the picture, breaks a barrier in our head and creates an alter-image of the distorted proportions. Mind morphing without the unease of surrealism.
Now I am interested in knowing how surrealists think.

When a reviewer talked of books that 'I wouldn't touch with a barge pole' in writing book review, i wondered what a barge pole is doing here and learn that its part of an idiom.

When nature takes over

One morning, I looked up in the restroom, I was shocked a bit. There was a hole with brown and metal stuff. I forgot that the leak from the top was being worked at. How horrible should one find sinkhole under a home?

Lots of good points

Margaret Overton

There is stable writing. But no great hook into the future of the book.
I like how she makes observations from her medical professional life.
She is candid about how ugly the end of a marriage can get.

Witty biography

The novelty of the biography with the subject and the biographer in an interactive mode wore off after a while. The sketches are page turners, some math is well shown in figures.

Grief in words

The line length in this book reminded me of

Both are of grief due to parental loss. One is prose and the other is poetry but the length of thought is similar.
I shuddered from reading the prose, as it is full sentences that can hold you caged.
In Morrison's poetry, the thought is contained in the line instead of extending into the next lines but an abstractness protects the reader.
How brave and trusting are the poets who leave a word of a sentence as an overhang into the next line.

Another went both ways of writing prose and poetry : Meghan O Rourke

The upside of Malling....

Good thing about malling(its a valid word) is you know that you already own loafers, bad thing.. that you dont own loafer socks...or toe toppers..or foot liners..

I have presented Jill( I knew her name only after Monica referred to her as Jill. I know Monica's name because I was passed on to her as a hot potato by Jill), a salesperson at Macy's with a genuine problem. Are short pants formal? I explained to Jill that I had wide leg pants my size but they were lacking formal look and I could not go for the narrow formal pants as they were too tall wanting legs.. Jill saw Monica and thought she could help me better with this as she faced a similar problem. Now I can recall Monica's voice and cannot recall how Jill looks cause now too much Monica happened.
I explained the whole problem to Monica again. She got a skirt and said stockings in place should make it or short formal pants look formal. But I thought that was going for a 'shop girl' look and an overdress for an engineering firm and after looking at all the possibilities of dressing - weird and allowed, Monica highly recommended a pair of 40$ long pants with another 15$ for alteration as a good investment. What impressed me was the description of the pants with

Senses

When Jack Hitt talks of seeing, he refers to an astronomer who can go into a room after staring at the sky and then return to the sky to tell if there has been any change in the sky. I wondered how good are we at each of our senses. For the smell, I know I am clueless.
When it comes to seeing, looking at this picture, I first saw a ceramic bowl tipped to its side. In 24 picture, I tend to look at the dark part and treat the left eye of the person as the right eye of another, all around looks like the hair lending an ape look.
Recently I surprised myself with my hearing. Before sleeping, I asked my husband 'What is that sound?' we both told each other that it is the AC. In the morning, I found it was the exhaust in the other bathroom. When I am in a room where both the exhaust and light are controlled by the same switch, I hate the noise. But without it, we could forget to switch off the exhaust. In the dark, light travels farther than sound.

Foreign ghost

When I picked the book, I wondered if foreign ghosts will scare us as much. The stories from my childhood Vikram Aur Betaalrepu raa ghost and many stories with evil cats that could not be crushed. Not all ghosts are scary. The Canterville Ghost.
The soul of a bellAnalysis of the storyAnother story

If The soul of a bell is the story of a child's love for parent, then yesterdays news is of a mothers for her child.

Stroop effect

Have you heard of tests where a word - a colour is written in a different colour?
Last weekend we were watching the movie Swades. During the credits, there was a shot where the title of the movie was written in many Indian languages. à°¸్వదేà°¸్ caught my eye as it is in my native language Telugu. But I was confused for a while as it is a Hindi word.
So stroop effect is not just limited to words of colours but words from different languages.

Better picture

A colleague took a wonderful picture in the tricky Antelope Canyon. He explained that he took different photos with different contrasts and merged them for High dynamic range imaging.

Too many before-afters

Author: Rich Roll
When too many things are stuffed into a story, the charm is lost, too many twines to follow.
The book began with the author asking his wife about 'the cleanse'. Before getting athletic the author was an excellent swimmer. In between came alcoholism. Because of these two journeys, it was hard to remain interested in the story, especially when the author can recall the day his tryst with alcohol began. Its the digging stage, so the author goes back to his past, but making them seperate stories but putting them in one book hurt the story.
I went by the book cover. I should have read the blurb.
